Carvalho can wait
Wednesday, Jan 19, 2005
Jose Mourinho has revealed that he has no intention of rushing injured
central defender Ricardo Carvalho back into action.
The Portuguese international has not played since the trip to Highbury
over a month ago due to a broken toe. However the form of John Terry
and William Gallas in his absence and a defence that has kept six
consecutive clean sheets in the Barclays Premiership affords the Chelsea
manager the luxury of waiting patiently for a complete recovery.
Speaking on Chelsea TV, Mourinho said: “Ricardo will be out for a few
weeks more. He is not yet in training and because we don’t need him,
we can wait for him to be 100 per cent. He could play at 75 per cent
if he had to but there is no need.”
Mourinho has also spoken for the first time about Chelsea’s lead at
the top of the table since it was extended into double figures on Saturday.
“In this league we cannot sleep,” he insisted. “Of course ten points
is ten points, it is better than seven and it is better than five but
if one day we lose a game or two points and the gap goes from ten to
seven or eight, we are ready to accept it as natural and keep going,
controlling the distance.
“If it goes from ten to twelve or thirteen points then maybe it
[the championship race] will be over.”
