Didier Drogba today turned up the heat on Chelsea's Premiership rivals by
warning them the club's long wait for success is driving them on.
The Ivory Coast striker, who scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season
in Saturday's 3-0 win over Birmingham, insists he has yet to fully adapt
to the rigours of the Premiership.
Drogba missed seven weeks of the season with a thigh injury and has been
forced to share striking duties with Eidur Gudjohnsen.
Drogba, expected to feature in tomorrow's Carling Cup semi-final against
Manchester United, said: "I'm very pleased with the goals I've scored
because it's my first year in England. It's not easy to come to a new
country, to score goals and to adapt. This is one of the best championships
in Europe and I need time to adapt. I've also been injured and I am not
100 percent.
"I must keep working and scoring goals but the most important thing is to
be champion. Fifty years without winning something is too much. In the
club's centenary, it is the year to win something."
Drogba also praised the contribution of Arjen Robben, who created both his
goals against Birmingham. He believes the 21-year-old Dutch winger, one of
the favourites to be named Football of the Year, is one of the best players
in Europe.
He said: "Arjen gets the ball, dribbles, passes and it's a goal. There
aren't many players with a left foot like his."
