Cech banks on Czech success

New Chelsea FC goalkeeper Petr Cech is preparing himself for a busy
summer as he jets off to UEFA EURO 2004 with the Czech Republic before his
big move to London.
French accolade
The giant custodian was in outstanding form during the qualifying
campaign, while his consistent performances for Stade Rennais FC this season
saw him voted as the best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 by France Football magazine.
That is sure to be a great confidence-boost ahead of a massive summer.
Final game
Despite being just 22-years-old, Chelsea forked out €10.3m in February
to secure Cech's services for next season. He played his final game for
Rennes last Sunday against Montpellier Herault SC and - as expected - it was
an emotional occasion.
English dream
"Part of me felt sad because I've had two great years at Rennes, but part
of me felt excited because I have a lot to look forward to," he told
euro2004.com. "I'm really pleased to be joining Chelsea. They're a big club
and it's been a dream of mine ever since I was a kid to play for a big club
in England."
Premiership prospects
He is already looking ahead to the coming challenges in the Premiership:
"First of all I have to win my place in the team - and that won't be easy
because Carlo Cudicini is a very good goalkeeper," said Cech. "Then hopefully
I can help Chelsea win the league. There's going to be a lot of pressure but
I'm looking forward to the challenge."
European focus
The goalkeeper's move to London is still over a month away and -for the
minute at least - EURO 2004 remains Cech's primary concern. Defeats in recent
friendly games against the Republic of Ireland and Japan may have cooled the
Czechs' enthusiasm, but the goalkeeper is still optimistic.
