'We'll do well'
"I think we'll do well," he said. "I read recently in the Czech press
that we're rated as the best Czech side for more than ten years. We've got
some terrific youngsters, and with the help of the experienced guys like
Pavel Nedved and Karel Poborsky we could go a long way."
Group hurdle
Drawn against the Netherlands, Germany and Latvia in Group D, the Czechs
will, however, face a tough task in reaching the knockout stages. "That's
the immediate problem," said Cech. "We know all about the Dutch because we
met them in qualifying, while Germany always raise their game in the big
tournaments."
'Great chance'
"But if we perform at our best we are capable of beating any team in the
world," he added, mindful of the superb run of form that saw the Czechs
unbeaten in 20 games before defeat in Dublin. "I'm convinced that if we reach
the quarter-finals we have a great chance to go all the way."
Nedved worries
Much of the burden for making such dreams come true would fall upon
Nedved. The Juventus FC player has been subdued recently, but Cech remains
convinced he can rise to the occasion in Portugal. "When Pavel plays for the
national team he always raises his game," said Cech. "I expect to see a big
Pavel Nedved in Portugal."
Worthy addition
He is hoping that the world, and his new fans in England, will see a big
Petr Cech too. "It's a great opportunity because the games are watched all
over the world," he said. "I'm ready to show people in England that I'm
worthy of joining Chelsea and I hope to start proving that by having a good
tournament in Portugal."
