Lampard: Gerrard Is A Giant

Frank Lampard has hailed Steven Gerrard as "one of the best midfielders in
Europe" and would welcome the prospect of developing a long-term partnership
with the Liverpool captain.

And Lampard insisted that England "should not look down on ourselves" and be
full of confidence for the battle in the middle of the park with Patrick Vieira
and company in the Euro 2004 opener with France next Sunday.

Lampard appeared more at ease in a conventional 4-4-2 system in Saturday's 6-1
demolition of Iceland than when operating at the base of the diamond formation
in the 1-1 draw with Japan four days earlier.

He and Gerrard looked to have an almost telepathic understanding as they
inter-changed successfully with one holding back to protect the back four if
the other ventured forward - as Lampard did in typical style for the opening

Lampard said: "I don't think you can feel bad about playing alongside Steven
Gerrard. He is a fantastic player.

and defend and we did that at the right times on Saturday.

Lampard insisted: "The way Steven has performed in the Premiership this season,

Lampard stopped short of indicating that he would prefer the 4-4-2 system
rather than the diamond but he revealed that Sven-Goran Eriksson does take on
board the views of the players in such matters.
He said: "I said after the game on Tuesday that my natural instinct is to go
forward. I've done it all season for Chelsea and it's been good for me. Against
Iceland I could play similar to that.
"Would I prefer 4-4-2 against France? That is a very difficult question. That
is for the manager to decide but I did enjoy it on Saturday.
"Whichever system we play, it is about players performing in the role they are
asked to do. Simple as that. But we did look very strong on Saturday.
"One of the strengths of the manager is that he does speak to the players and
he does take on board a lot of the things that we say - especially from the
captain and the senior players.
"Although he will make the final decision, as he should do, he will listen to
us and that is something the players really respect."
Lampard also believes Scholes will soon end his three-year goal drought with
England stretching back to the World Cup qualifier with Greece in Athens in
June 2001.
He said: "Scholesy is a goalscorer. He scores more goals than a lot of strikers
do. It is only a matter of time before he scores for England again. He is
always going to score goals - especially in the big games
