Mourinho's first week
Sunday, Jun 06, 2004
Jose Mourinho has now gone on holiday at the end of a very hectic week.
Chelsea approached Porto last Friday for permission to speak to their
manager. Talks followed all weekend and on Monday. An agreement was reached
with the club on Monday and the outlines of an agreement with Jose on Monday
evening.
During this time he met not just with Peter Kenyon but with Roman
Abramovich and Chelsea director Eugene Tenenbaum.
Kenyon and Mourinho flew into London on Tuesday lunchtime and
negotiations continued into the evening when an agreement was reached. The
talks throughout the weekend had covered the brief of the job, the details
of players and staff and of working plans and developments.
The new manager then spent the remainder of the evening studying a
document on the Academy and one of the agenda for the United States pre-
season tour.
On Wednesday morning and lunchtime he met the media, and in the
afternoon visited the England camp with Kenyon and Abramovich to meet the
Chelsea players there while speaking to others on the phone.
Thursday was spent with Abramovich visiting Harlington and Cobham to
agree long-term plans for our training grounds. On Friday morning he met the
Academy staff at Stamford Bridge, the coaches and managers, and in the early
afternoon met journalists from the Sunday newspapers to give them the stories
that you can read today.
In the late afternoon he finally found time to spend with his family in
what will be their home for the next three years – they have already found
somewhere to live. While he was sorting out his working life, his wife was
sorting out everything else.
Thus at the end of the holiday he should hit the ground running. Pre-
season training starts on July 5th.
