Goal gives Gronkjaer reason to smile

A Euro 2004 football match was a welcome distraction for Denmark's Jesper
Gronkjaer following a sad week back home in Scandinavia.
Gronkjaer only joined up with his national team this week in Portugal because
he had been by his mother Irmelin's side in her final days before she died of
cancer
After arriving in Lisbon to train with the national team, Gronkjaer was deemed
fit enough to play against Bulgaria and he scored a late goal in the Danes' 2-0
triumph on Friday.
"It was very special, and it's something that I will never, ever forget,"
Gronkjaer said. "It was unbelievable and a really great motivation for me."
Gronkjaer has had a lot on his mind. Not only has he had to cope with his
mother's death, but the winger's club future has been up in the air.
He looks to be headed for the West Midlands to join Birmingham, who have
already had an offer for the player accepted by Chelsea.
He was a favourite of Claudio Ranieri at Stamford Bridge but the coach was
sacked after the season and has taken over at Valencia.
Right now the player is focusing on his national team, whom he dreamed of
playing for when he was a boy.
"I can remember that feeling of sitting far away at home in Denmark and
watching all of the red and white colours," he said. "And I'm delighted about
this."
