England restoration for Terry
Tuesday, Nov 16, 2004
England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has announced that John Terry will return
to his country’s starting line-up to face Spain on Wednesday evening.
Terry has been a regular for England since June 2003 but with Rio Ferdinand
available for selection again last month after an eight-month ban, he found
himself on the bench for World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Azerbaijan.
However with Sol Campbell now ruled out through injury, the Chelsea captain is
the natural choice to come into the chosen defence and in his Tuesday press
conference, Eriksson made a special point of announcing this will be his
decision.
It will be 23 year-old Terry’s 15th cap and 14th start.
The England manager confirmed that it will be a strong England side running out
in Real Madrid’s Bernabeu Stadium and he hinted that Wayne Bridge may also be
involved from kick-off.
Eriksson said: “Maybe I will look at playing Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge from
the start. It was very good when they played together and fantastic to see
because you didn’t know who was left back and who was left midfield.”
