Chief Executive Peter Kenyon today insisted that Chelsea will not be
ripped off in their attempts to bring the world's best players to Stamford
Bridge.
Chelsea have been quoted a fee of £27million for Didier Drogba after
Marseille rejected a £19m offer for the striker on Tuesday but are not
prepared to match the club's asking price.
Kenyon revealed that Chelsea have already walked away from several possible
signings they considered too expensive and warned that they are prepared to do
so again.
He said: "We always have a top limit above which we will not go. We look
at the total cost of every player and have a number which we're not prepared
to break. We're determined to get value for money and have walked away from
some players because the tab was too high.
"We want players who represent a good deal for the club. We're prepared
to walk away from a player for the sake of £1million or £2m. The search for
value is the same as at other clubs."
Kenyon's comments reflect the growing desire at Stamford Bridge to run
Chelsea as a self-sufficient business, which insiders believe can be achieved
in five years. In an interview last weekend, director Eugene Tenenbaum,
Roman Abramovich's closest aide at the club, insisted that they were always
searching for value for money, a policy decision taken by the Russian owner
himself.
Benfica midfield Tiago is expected at the club for a medical today before
completing a £6m move and the Drogba deal should be completed by Monday,
leaving a fourth centre-back as the one outstanding transfer target.
