KEZMAN'S TERROR OVER KIDNAP BID Jul 11 2004

MATEJA KEZMAN has been forced to live in constant fear for his and his family's
lives after police foiled a plan to kidnap him.
Chelsea's prolific new striker - who scored 113 goals in four seasons at PSV
Eindhoven - was targeted by Yugoslav gangsters last October.
The criminals spent six months planning the kidnapping, intent on holding
Kezman hostage - and killing him if millions weren't paid to free him.
Kezman, 25, was oblivious to the plot until he returned from Serbia's Euro 2004
qualifier against Wales in Cardiff and was met by officers who informed him
they had made several arrests after uncovering the plot.
Kezman, the man Chelsea hope will shoot them to the Premiership title following
his ￡7million move, told Sunday Mirror Sport: "I was absolutely horrified when
police gave me details of the plan to kidnap me.
"I was forced to walk around with bodyguards for months.
"I was a nervous wreck. I feared for my life and those of my family. There
wasn't a minute that passed that I wasn't filled with fear and paranoia.
"During the second half of the season I only scored half the amount of goals I
scored before Christmas. I still finished top scorer in the Netherlands, but
nobody understood what had happened to me because I couldn't talk about it.
"The impact of the thing threatened to destroy my career in football. I
couldn't sleep, I was barely eating and I had terrible nightmares.
"It was so difficult because we were forced to lead completely different lives.
I felt like some FBI informant who had been given a new identity.
"Now, knowing I will be playing in England with Chelsea, it is better for me. I
can learn to live with it. It is not on my mind any more for 24 hours a day."
Kezman's self-confidence appears to have remained intact. He added: "At PSV I
scored goals for the club for four years and every year I was the leading
scorer.
"But I need a bigger stage and that stage is the Premier League with Chelsea."
Kezman Is not opposed to the odd ruck in the dressing room.
"When I think the dressing room is falling asleep, I will wake it up by causing
a few rows. I will do anything to get the best out of the team."
