Wayne can bridge the gap

Defender Wayne Bridge is ready to answer an emergency call from Sven-Goran
Eriksson if he is asked to fill the troubled left-sided midfield role in
tomorrow's World Cup qualifier against Austria.


Bridge is in contention with Joe Cole, as well as Kieron Dyer, to start
tomorrow's game in Vienna as Nicky Butt is injured and Paul Scholes has
retired from international duty.


With Steven Gerrard also rated as 50-50 to start the game due to a groin
injury, Bridge could be considered a safer option instead of Cole, his more
attack-minded Chelsea team-mate.


Left-back Bridge may have started his career as a midfielder, but he has
played there just once for his country - in the 2-2 draw against Macedonia in
Southampton in October 2002.


Eriksson has nevertheless tried out Bridge in tandem with Ashley Cole down the
left flank in training this week and is now poised to decide between him and
Joe Cole ahead of tomorrow's game.


Bridge, 24, said: 'I think it would work. I played there in my early days at
Southampton and I think I could adapt.


'We played the system for an hour against Macedonia a couple of years ago and
I thought Ashley and I worked quite well together.


'It took me a little time to tuck back into the midfield when we were
defending, but I am positive that I would work it out quickly enough.'
