The Portuguese international right-back moved to London in the same summer
as Jose Mourinho and has played a part in all Chelsea's trophy successes
since.

A personally disappointing Euro 2004 tournament would have raised question
marks over Chelsea's willingness to pay a British record ￡13.2 million
fee for a full-back had Mourinho not known his compatriot inside-out. The
pair had walked the road to Champions League glory together at Porto where
they also accumulated the Portuguese League, Cup and UEFA Cup.

crosses, he became an international within six months of signing from
lower table side Vitoria Setubal although his nation's big party in the
summer of Euro 2004 fell flat for Paulo. He was dropped after a mistake in
the opening game, only returning midway through Portugal's last game.

full-back of choice in the Champions League. He played in midfield in the
FA Cup semi-final defeat by Liverpool.

Cup v Colchester. In the World Cup he was a second-choice selection for
his nation.

Although Gallas has gone, Paulo now faces competition for a place from
Khalid Boulahrouz and the signing of Ashley Cole looks set to reduce his
occasional appearances on the left.

He was a stand-in centre-back pre-season and Mourinho has listed him as an
