Chelsea has completed the signing of top goalkeeper Petr Cech from
French club Rennes for a fee of ￡7m.
Cech, at 6'4", has represented the Czech Republic at all levels. Now
21, he is the first choice of the senior team at the Euro 2004 tournament
in Portugal this summer, to add to his 15 caps. The Czech Republic qualified
for Portugal at the top of their group with Petr conceding just five goals
in eight qualifying games. He helped his nation to win the European Under 21
Championships in 2002.
He has signed a five year contract and will join in July following his
second season in France; prior to that he was with Sparta Prague where he
gained Champions League experience.
Paul Smith, who represented Chelsea in the negotiations, said: "Petr is
rated by most observers as the best European goalkeeper of his generation.
We are delighted that he chose to come to Stamford Bridge. Following the
purchase of Scott Parker, you can see that Chelsea is pursuing a very clear
policy of attracting world class talent for the future."
Asked to comment on the significance of the latest addition, head coach
Claudio Ranieri said: "Petr is the best goalkeeper of his age that I have
seen for a long time and we are very fortunate to have captured him.
"He is still very young and learning his craft, but I have every
confidence that he will prove to be a valuable member of our squad. He is
courageous and athletic and can already read a game very well. In particular
, he has made some fantastic saves when faced with attackers one-on-one."
