No concerns about shooting from Chelsea
Friday, Feb 27, 2004
Hernan Crespo has expressed delight at another away European win and
dismissed the fact that Chelsea managed no shots on target in Stuttgart.
“We are very happy. We played very well. We are very happy because
this result is very important for us and now we can wait until we play
them at home,” he said on Chelsea TV.
“Yes that is very strange (that we didn’t have a shot on target) but
we had the opportunities to score, we missed and the goal came in a lucky
action but I think the team played very well.
“When the cross arrived something had to happen, a goal or corner
kick or something. If you touch but don’t cross it’s very difficult but
this evening I think he (Glen Johnson) played very well.”
Carlo Cudicini, back in goal, had no new problems with his groin injury
and produced a save from Meissner after six minutes, a reflex swoop to an
eight metres drive, which turned the course of the match.
“Yes it was a good save,” he admitted, “especially when it’s that
cold it’s not so easy to get in the game but we had a good start and in
the end when we scored the game was a bit easier for us.”
Choosing not to take the goal-kicks got him into trouble because William
Gallas forgot to take one and Carlo got booked for wasting time. It was his
second booking of the tournament. He was relieved to discover it does not
lead to a ban.
“When we got back in the dressing room I just asked if it’s two or
three yellow cards, fortunately it’s three so I’ve got one more chance.
“The groin is very good. I didn’t want to kick because I wanted to be
sure that everything was fine and in the end, even though it was hard work
for John and Gallas going up and down, in the end I think we did it.
“It’s normal when you play away, you have to suffer a little bit to
get a good result. And we did it. We defended very well, I think they did
not have a lot of chances. In the end it’s a very good performance, very
good result but we need to play another game.
“They’ve got a great player on the left hand side and he created us a
lot of problems, very good skills, quick, pace but in the end I think Johnno
(Glen Johnson) did a great job as well.
“It’s a great result for us. It’s true, maybe we didn’t have shot
on goal but Eidur had a great chance to make it 2-0.”
William Gallas has been in splendid European form this season, and urged
restraint of joy after the victory.
“I think the second game will be difficult at home because they are
very good, they are very strong and we will see.
“I think everybody tonight played very well, everybody did their job
but now we must be very concentrated for the second game because that will
be very, very difficult.”
