The Chelsea star is relishing the prospect of trying to shackle Zinedine Zidane
if he is given the responsibility of the holding role in front of the back four.
It was a new challenge for Lampard whose driving runs forward and healthy goals
return have been a feature of Chelsea's play during the past season.
He admitted it was difficult to curb those natural instincts to attack that have
been a feature of his play since his early days at West Ham.
But Lampard concedes that the positions of David Beckham, Paul Scholes and
Steven Gerrard in the side are 'untouchable' and will adapt as required by Sven-
Goran Eriksson if it means he edges out Nicky Butt for the match in Lisbon on
June 13.
Lampard said: 'If I have to play there against Zidane, then it is going to be a
big challenge for me.
'He is probably the best player in the world, and has been for the last few
years, but big challenges are what it is all about.
'If you want to get to the top and play and do well in these competitions, you
have to play against those kind of quality players.
'We will also be up against Vieira, Pires, Makelele - top class players in
midfield whom we all know about from the Premiership.
He admitted: 'It is difficult and you have to remind yourself not to go forward
at times because that is my instinct.
'There were times when I had to stay in there otherwise we would have been very
open. If I play against France in that position, I know I wouldn't be able to
get forward so much.'
But Lampard insisted: 'It is not frustrating for me because I can get into the
first 11 for the European Championships which is great for me.
'It is well documented that three players in the side are quite untouchable and
then a few of us are fighting for the other spot.
'If I can show that I've got the intelligence to play in different positions,
then it's not a bad thing.
'These two games with Japan and Iceland plus the training are all about working
on things and making sure we are ready for the first game of the tournament.
'I am learning the role but I am also enjoying it and if I get another chance on
Saturday, I think I'll do even better.'
