Lamps still glowing

Frank Lampard will be crowned England Player of the Year 2004 tonight,
having polled 40% of a massive 20,000 votes cast around the world on
TheFA.com.

An incredible year saw him rise from the fringes of the side to
certain starter in the heart of the England midfield, and in 13
appearances for the Three Lions the Chelsea man netted six times,
making him a real favourite with the England faithful.

Understandably he was delighted to have received such an accolade:

"It was a great year," he said. "It’s not that long ago that I was
in and out of the team and more of a squad member than a team member.

"I’ve pushed on a lot this year and it’s a great reward - I’m
really proud to have won it.

"I broke through into the team probably in the year before the Euros.
When we played against South Africa I came on and as a sub, played well,
and then got involved in the next qualifier.

"That I was starting a qualifier gave me a bit of belief and from then
on I played quite regularly last season.

"In the Euros I wasn’t sure I was going to start and by starting it
gave me real confidence in that tournament and from then on I scored
goals and felt very comfortable playing there."

In the highlight of the international year, the European Championships,
Frank forged a strong partnership with Steven Gerrard in the centre of
midfield from where he found the net against France, Croatia and Portugal.

"It was the highest point in my career," he confirms. "The most
enjoyable month in my career, probably of my life.

"Just to be involved, to feel a real big part of the plans - the games
were massive occasions.

"We had TV so we could see the media from back home and what was
building up.

"It’s a kind of surreal sort of atmosphere. As a kid you always look
up and see these tournaments going on - when you’re in it it’s kind
of weird, but brilliant.

"I just remember the feeling of excitement as I ran off celebrating
that goal [against France] - it was like nothing I’ve ever felt before.

"Also the Portugal one, that was kind of tainted because that was the
night we were knocked out, but that goal was very exhilarating at that
moment.

"The adrenaline pumps so much that you don’t really know what you
think for a few minutes."

Lampard's goal against France looked set to get the Three Lions off
to a flying start at Euro 2004, but of course it was the genius of
Zinedine Zidane who denied England one of their finest victories ever.

Seeing the man up close simply increased Frank's admiration for him:

"Playing against him you realise the man is a real genius as a
footballer," he said.

"He wasn’t at his pure best in the game, but the ball sticks. The
minute you put your foot in he takes the ball away from you.

"It’s a horrible to play against a player you can’t tackle because
the moment you do he moves it away. He’s the best I’ve ever played against.

"He sticks out on his own in that way. But him and a lot of the other
top players, you can try and take little bits from their game."

Frank will be presented with the award by our competition winner,
Mick Longstaff from Whitburn in Sunderland. He'll travel down to
Villa Park with a friend to watch England take on Holland on
Wednesday 9 February and hand Frank the newly-designed trophy
shortly before the game kicks off.
