Terry and Lampard set to thrash out five-year deals
Matt Scott
Monday May 21, 2007
John Terry and Frank Lampard will open contract talks to resolve their
Chelsea futures now the season's work is complete for the FA Cup winners. The
Chelsea captain had delayed negotiations on what he hopes to be a five-year
deal worth more than £5m a year but expects to have an agreement in
principle before he leads England in the European Championship qualifiers
next month.
"Now the season's over for Chelsea I'd like to see things get sorted out and
I'm hopeful that it will get sorted and we'll have talks," Terry said. "I
didn't want to be in talks before the Cup final, nor in the build-up to what
could have been us retaining the Premiership.
"I said to Chelsea, 'Look, let's wait and see what happens then go with it
again in the summer.' It's not right going into these games with things on
your mind. I'm happy here and hopefully things can be resolved. I'd like it
done tomorrow. I'd like it done as soon as possible really.
"I've said to the club that once the season's over I'd have a chat with Peter
Kenyon and Eugene [Tenenbaum] and I'm sure we'll get it sorted."
Terry's summer break will be occupied by discussions on the contract and his
wedding to Toni Poole, the mother of his twin children, and the Chelsea
hierarchy is equally willing to arrange deals for him and Lampard. With Jose
Mourinho's future seemingly settled after his team won both domestic cups and
the board's search for a replacement manager yielded no suitable candidates,
he is keen that two of his senior players' futures be tied down.
"Now is the time for people to have a calm dialogue," said Mourinho. "We are
speaking about players with a passion for the club, players who are not at
the end of their contracts, players who want to stay. Of course they want a
good deal but they want to stay and that is very important and I think it is
time for that. There is some time to discuss that and to reach a final
agreement. These two boys can say they have won everything in English
football in only three years, and they want more."
Lampard said last week that he wants to put pen to paper on a renewed,
five-year deal and Kenyon, the club's chief executive, expressed his belief
to Radio Five's Sportsweek programme yesterday that it will soon be
finalised. "I think it would be settled in the near future," said Kenyon.
"Frank has said he wants it sorting before next season and we want it sorting
before next season. For all parties, it would be the sooner the better."
For Mourinho the main priority is that his players return fit for pre-season
but whether that will be possible for Ashley Cole is uncertain. The left-back
is having surgery on an ankle-bone spur that will prevent him from playing
for England this summer.
"I've got an operation on Monday, I see the specialist on Tuesday and we'll
just see how I go," said Cole, who featured in Saturday's FA Cup final as an
extra-time substitute. "It's not major surgery and hopefully I'll be OK for
pre-season."
Mourinho will then turn his attention to bringing Reading's out-of-contract
midfielder, Steve Sidwell, to Stamford Bridge, with the PSV Eindhoven
defender Alex also likely to join the squad. Bayern Munich's striker Claudio
Pizarro is another free-transfer option Chelsea are believed to be
considering.
"If we can get three players to give balance to the team then we are in a
good position," said Mourinho. "We don't need to spend big money, I think we
can do it calmly and wisely. We can do a good job and keep money in the bank."
