Players off to internationals

Most of the players have internationals over the next week and join
their squads today. John Terry is joining the England squad but his knee
injury suffered against Tottenham needs further assessment before it is
decided if he can play or not. Hernan Crespo strained a groin muscle at
Tottenham and is unlikely to be part of Argentina’s game in Paraguay.
Below are the World Cup qualifiers.
Europe Group 1:
Holland (Arjen Robben) 8 games, 22 points
Czech Republic (Petr Cech) 8 21
Romania 10 19
Saturday: Armenia v Holland,
Romania v Czech Republic.
Wednesday week: Czech Republic v Armenia,
Holland v Andorra.
Europe Group 3:
Portugal (Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho) 8 games, 29 points
Slovakia 9 18
Saturday: Portugal v Luxembourg.
Wednesday week: Russia v Portugal.
Europe Group 4:
Ireland (Damien Duff) 7 games, 13 points
Switzerland 6 12

France (William Gallas, Claude Makelele) 6 10
Saturday: France v Faroe Islands.
Wednesday week: Ireland v France — what a six pointer!

Sunday: Ghana v Uganda.
Uganda are bottom. In Africa the first team qualifies for the World Cup,
but the first two teams qualify for January’s African Cup of Nations.
Africa Group 3:
Ivory Coast (Didier Drogba) 8 games, 19 points
Cameroon (Geremi) 8 17
Egypt 8 13
Sunday: Ivory Coast v Cameroon.
If Ivory Coast win they qualify for the World Cup and Cameroon are out.
What a decider! But both should qualify for the African Cup of Nations.
Also off on international duty are Glen Johnson and Carlton Cole
(England Under 21s), Robert Huth (Germany Under 21s) — England and
Germany Under 21s face each other on Tuesday week and Germany top the
qualifying group from England on goal difference — and Lassana Diarra
(France Under 21s).
In addition, at the Pepsi International Tournament this week we have
Jack Cork (England Under 17s), Ricardo Fernandes and Fabio Ferreira
(Portugal Under 17s).

Terry out of internationals

John Terry will miss England’s next two World Cup qualifiers due to
a knee injury. Terry sustained the injury during Chelsea’s win at
Tottenham on Saturday after an aerial challenge. The damage occurred not
when he jumped, nor when he landed but was caused by a Spurs player
falling on his leg after the landing.
Terry required treatment both on and at the side of the pitch but he
completed the 90 minutes and after further treatment at Chelsea on Monday,
joined up with the England party in Hertfordshire today [Tuesday].
After being examined by England’s medical staff, he was sent back to
Chelsea and is ruled out of the England matches against Wales on Saturday
and Northern Ireland next Wednesday.
