Cole's England future assured

Joe Cole has been reassured over his England future despite being left out of
the squad for next week's friendly against Ukraine.

But it seems Phil Neville faces rather more of a battle to win back his place
after being overlooked in favour of teenage Chelsea defender Glen Johnson.

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson was already without Sol Campbell and Wayne
Rooney through injury from his 23-man Euro 2004 squad, while Paul Scholes has
now retired from international football.

But Cole, Neville and Ian Walker were also omitted from the 24-man squad named
for Wednesday's game at St James' Park.

However, Cole, 22, has been reassured that he was omitted from the latest squad
only because of concerns over his fitness.

FA head of media Adrian Bevington revealed: "Sven had a conversation with Jose
Mourinho before the weekend and he was told that Joe was carrying an injury. He
was therefore left out of the squad for that reason, and for that reason alone.
"
