SHARPENING UP FOR THE BLADES

As all at Stamford Bridge gear up for a new season, so too does Chelsea
magazine, once again packed full of features from around the club.

First up is sports-mad Michael Essien, who gave the mag an exclusive look
around his home, challenging Chelsea to basketball, snooker and darts. The
Ghanaian had a busy 2007/8 season, being Chelsea's most prolific
international appearance maker with 16 run outs in his country's white
shirt, meaning overall he played 62 games.

'It seems longer than normal, mainly because I went away in the middle, I
don't know,' he said, adding: 'At the end, I think we have something to be
pleased about even if we didn't win anything because we kept going and
believing right until the last game.'

While Blues fans will acknowledge the extended season for the contingent
at Euro 2008, many will be unaware that the African nations too had
important fixtures in World Cup qualifying. That allowed Essien, a
national hero, some time in his homeland before reporting back for
pre-season training.

'People recognise me but that's okay and it's the same over here,' he
reasons. 'My mum is a very good cook and although I can get hold of any
food I want in England, I still miss my mum's food. My favourite is her
yam stew.'

If Essien is the present, there is also a look at Chelsea's recent past,
as we catch up with former star and manager Gianluca Vialli. Vialli was a
Champions League winning captain when he arrived at the Bridge from
Juventus 12 years ago, and explains what it was that attracted him to join
Ruud Gullit's revolution.

'The idea was to improve and try to win something, in England or in
Europe,' he explains. 'There was a European mentality with the coach,

Learn it he certainly did, though not through the traditional channels,
instead using cockney Dennis Wise to 'widen my knowledge of the language.'
The two became close friends as the Italian's personable nature came
across, making him a fans' favourite.

Taking up the management role in early 1998, he readily admits that it was
a difficult time for him, as relationships with the people that had been
his team-mates were forced to change.

'I felt I was the one in the most difficult position,' he confesses. 'It's

However, the Italian now looks back on his time at the Bridge with a sense
of satisfaction.

'It was a good time - two-and-a-half years and we won five trophies, which
is always rewarding, a good feeling when you work hard and try and leave a
mark,' he said.

Going even further back to the early nineties, Chelsea speaks to a former
defender whose life has flipped upside down - Ken Monkou now owns a
pancake restaurant.
Following on from Jakob Kjeldbjerg, reality TV presenter, and Micky
Hazard, taxi driver, Dutchman Monkou is the latest in a line of ex-Blues
to try his hand at something different since hanging up his boots.
'It's exciting to be involved with my own business now and to be serving
up treats for my customers,' said the defender, traditionally more
accustomed to be giving nothing away.
Despite the change of direction, the clientele remain familiar. 'There
have already been a few Chelsea supporters come in and they recognised me
instantly. They are always warm and want to have their picture taken,' he
smiled.
As celebrity fans go, Johnny Vaughan is about as avid as they come, and he
has been telling Chelsea about his love for the club.
'I went to school in Barnet and everyone there supported Arsenal so it
boils down to wanting to be different,' he says. 'We decided to support
Chelsea as a statement.
'It was also a golden era for Chelsea - this was 1970 - so I guess I
started supporting them really as a four-year-old boy off the back of an
FA Cup win.'
Among other topics, Capital Radio DJ Vaughan also discusses new manager
Felipe Scolari, a man he refers to as 'football's Notorious B.I.G'.
'I don't think they come any bigger than big Phil Scolari - I'd put him
above Big Jack and Big Ron in terms of his bigness, he's left Big Sam in
the shade, so we've got the biggest man in football.'
This may be so for now, but one youngster working on catching him up is
16-year-old giant Frank Nouble, who caught the eye with his appearances in
the youth team last season. Now a first year scholar in the Academy, he is
hoping to build on the progress he made last season as a schoolboy.

'I watched van Nistelrooy at Man United, and take a bit from players like

these role models, promises to be a daunting prospect for defenders in the
years to come.
