Chelsea are today set to announce Michael Essien as their second major signing
of the summer.

Stamford Bridge officials spent most of yesterday negotiating the terms of the
Ghana midfielder's long-awaited move from Lyon.

切爾西高層昨天花大部分時間進行這筆交易細節.

Essien was quoted as saying on Tuesday that he wanted to leave Lyon for
Chelsea. "I want to leave," Essien told French sports daily L'Equipe. "I want
to play in England at Chelsea."

The deal brings to an end one of the summer's most intriguing transfer sagas
as Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho finally wins his battle with Manchester
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson for the signature of one of Europe's most
coveted players.

Chelsea have agreed a basic fee of ￡17million with the French champions for
the 22-yearold, who joins left back Asier Del Horno, last month's ￡8m
acquisition from Athletic Bilbao.

Essien, France's player of the year, rose to prominence last season as Lyon
reached the Champions League quarter-finals, and a number of Europe's leading
clubs expressed an interest in the midfielder.

Although he revealed he would favour a move to Manchester United, he was
Mourinho's primary target after Steven Gerrard decided to stay with Liverpool,
and Chelsea became the only realistic contenders for his signature as the
French champions did their utmost to keep the player in France.

Essien has been convinced to join Chelsea by a charm offensive that included
personal phone calls from Mourinho and will sign an already agreed four-year
contract with the Premiership champions worth ￡3m a year.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon flew to Lyon yesterday to finalise the
deal for the box-to-box midfielder, who will most likely operate on the other
flank to Frank Lampard.

Essien is expected to arrive in London today to take his medical and begin his
application for a UK work permit which, since he is a mainstay of Ghana's
international team, should prove a formality.
