Despite some promising performances, there was an overriding feeling of
disappointment in the camp following the penalty shootout defeat to
Manchester United on Sunday.

Having fallen behind we levelled right on half-time through a superb goal
from debutant Florent Malouda, who had linked up with man-of-the match Ashley
Cole down the left flank, but eventually we lost out on spot kicks as Edwin

harder to keep the ball and give the defence some respite, but Ashley was
adamant the team were able to adapt, saying: 'If you've got nothing on you
can hit it long to Didier, but the front three did well today, Malouda
scored, and Joey and Shaun were brilliant again, so there's good things to
come.'

Malouda also believes that the front three worked well together, a slight
change of tactics by the manager ensuring they remained dangerous, and scored
the goal to get back on level terms. 'I was really happy to score that goal.

organisation. In a good moment we managed to score this goal. After I think
the two teams couldn't find a way to score, and with no extra time it was
penalties.'

There was disappointment following Van der Sar's heroics during the shootout,
but Malouda insisted no blame can be attached. 'It's not a problem who shot
the penalties, it's one against one with the goalkeeper. You can be good and
sometimes you miss, that's life.'
