Henrique Hilario


Portuguese goalkeeper Hilario agreed to join Chelsea on a free transfer in
the summer of 2006. He became third choice keeper in place of Lenny
Pidgeley who was allowed to move to Millwall. Unlike Pidgeley, a young
keeper looking to make a career for himself in the game, Hilario was an
experienced 30 year-old, happy to take on a support role.

He had come to the end of a contract at Portuguese top-flight club
Nacional. Previously, the former Under 21 international played two spells
at Porto where he was a part of domestic league and cup wins. The second
spell was under Jose Mourinho. He left for Nacional to gain more first
team games.

"Hilario is everything we need," said Jose Mourinho on being reunited with
the keeper at Chelsea. "He is experienced and every week since leaving
Porto, he was playing regularly in the top division.


He has qualified for the UEFA Cup twice so has European experience.

The manager's choice looked a wise one when after head injuries to both
Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini in the same game, the new man was handed a
full Chelsea debut in a massive home fixture against Barcelona. Hilario
kept a clean sheet and let no-one down, continuing to perform steadily in
further games.
