Shevchenko simply tried too hard, says Desailly
June 1, 2007 Matt Hughes in Accra, Ghana
There have been many theories expounded for Andriy Shevchenko's failure to
take the Barclays Premiership by storm, but Marcel Desailly's explanation
is perhaps the most intriguing. Rather than lacking courage and
commitment, Shevchenko has simply tried too hard, according to the former
Chelsea captain.
Jose Mourinho is unlikely to agree, having mimed a golf swing when asked
about Shevchenko's whereabouts towards the end of last season. The Chelsea
manager has repeatedly complained about his record signing's attitude in
training, although Desailly offers a fresh perspective on the difficulties
of making the transition from AC Milan. A groin injury sustained towards
the end of Shevchenko's final campaign in Italy has been a hindrance,
exacerbated by his endeavours for Ukraine during last summer's World Cup.
“There are plenty of reasons why he has struggled, preparation for one,”
Desailly said. “He knows the mistakes he has made. Because he was
motivated, he has spoilt his physical aspect a little bit. At the
beginning of the season he trained too much, whereas in Milan he was the
top player and could choose the type of training he was doing.
“At Chelsea he started doing everything like the other players and his
body has lost the power. His speed and sharpness have suffered. Three
months before, he was fast, and now he is slow. When you see your legs are
not working as before, your brain starts to create problems, thinking
you're no good and cannot make it. So when your legs come back to the
right level, your brain is not there. Your confidence goes.”
Although not blaming the manager, Desailly is convinced that Shevchenko
has suffered as a result of Mourinho's refusal to indulge individuals.
“Sheva has arrived in a team where the set-up is not just for him, it's
for many players,” he said. “Mourinho has made Shevchenko like all his
other players. He has potential but gets no special treatment. Mourinho is
in charge of the group and decided to look at other options because the
performances were not good enough. There's another element. Milan is a
very difficult club to leave, because it's a family. All the people have
been there for years, the players, coaches and management. Win or lose
there's no pressure, just try to do your best. Everyone is very tight.”
Shevchenko has not experienced such a sense of solidarity at Stamford
Bridge, although Desailly is quick to point out that he also struggled
after his arrival from Milan. The Frenchman was limited to a single FA Cup
triumph during a six-year spell at Chelsea but remains close to the club,
travelling with them to his birthplace in Accra this week to promote their
work with the children's charity, Right to Play.
“Chelsea was a small young team when I arrived, just trying to do
something,” Desailly said. “It was very difficult when I arrived as I'd
been in Milan and was used to the very best. I could not understand how it
was possible to have expensive players living in conditions like this with
terrible facilities. Sometimes I was going to training and was not
motivated. For many years I'm sure we lost points because of that.
“Mourinho has made the difference. [Claudio] Ranieri was a top coach, but
the relationship with his players was not at the level Mourinho has with
his players. They know he will kill them if they don't perform, but they
like him. They didn't like Ranieri. When Mourinho shouts at them, they
know it's fair and there's a good relationship. With Ranieri, the
relationship was not good off the pitch.
“The players were not ready to fight for him, but they will for Mourinho
as they love him. It makes a huge difference. Look at Shevchenko.”

But you saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes,
your goddamn strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times
over! You've kept me honest, made me a whole person. I owe you everything,
Scully, and you owe me nothing. I don't know if I wanna do this alone...
I don't even know if I can... and if I quit now, they win.
