Managerial time machine
By Tony Cascarino
AN AURA OF CONFIDENCE has rubbed off from Jose Mourinho on his Chelsea team.
It has been refreshing to witness a manager breezing into a club with such
assurance, confidence and so quickly attain a level of performance. He has
not traipsed out bog-standard excuses of needing time. He knew and respected
that his mission was to win trophies — and fast. Saying that, I’ve been
amazed by the speed that things have developed.
Yes, he had the nucleus of a good team that finished second last season and
had pots of money to spend, but it took Sir Alex Ferguson seven years to win
his first title at Manchester United, during which time he had a high
turnover of players and came close to being dismissed. Arsene Wenger took
nearly two seasons at Arsenal and their gradual improvement has not been as
dramatic as at Chelsea, where Mourinho could win the title in his first season
.
He has been invigorating in the honest and forthright way that he deals with
the media. What manager except him would have said that he doesn’t believe
that his squad needs strengthening and that he didn’t want Jermain Defoe?
When the media questioned the negativity of his team, he replied that they
will come good. They have in recent weeks, scoring four against Fulham
and Charlton Athletic.
No one I’ve spoken to has had a bad word to say about him. Inevitably,
players become apprehensive when a new manager comes to the club. Doubts
surface about whether they will be wanted and in Mourinho’s case he was
largely unknown in England. Players would have known his record of winning
trophies and that he was opinionated, but now they appreciate that they have
become better players for his presence, helped by a fresh approach to training
that has included using ballboys to get the ball back in play quickly.
He has been able to foster camaraderie among the squad, which I thought might
not happen. I had expected him to be arguing with players when he substituted
them, but he has been showing his appreciation by hugging and patting them on
the back. I expected that he would be ruthless, as he has been on occasions
with Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo, and also with Joe Cole when he criticised
the midfield player for losing the ball in a game in which he had been
outstanding. It was a gentle reminder that Cole had much to learn.
Mourinho has been able to make the players left out of the side feel welcome
and that they have roles to play. The majority of managers don’t do that. I
can imagine him telling Roman Abramovich and Peter Kenyon during their first
meeting that they had wasted more then £100 million on players last season
and that he wanted to bring in younger, more ambitious players who had
something to prove.
Many of Mourinho’s traits are common to Wenger and Ferguson — such as a
desire for success, a passion, and ruthlessness in offloading players. But
he has many differences, including having won the European Cup at a younger
age. Privately, Wenger and Ferguson must be impressed with him too, though
I could imagine the United manager feeling that Mourinho would have enjoyed
less glory had a“good”goal not been disallowed when United played FC Porto
last season in the Champions League.
Wenger, until the new stadium is built, has a tight transfer budget, while
Ferguson broke various transfer records in signing Gary Pallister and
Roy Keane to win the first few titles and more recently with
Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rio Ferdinand. Mourinho has the luxury of money
but knows that he has not won anything with Chelsea just yet.
