Jose Mourinho may have won the Champions League only four months ago but he
admits he is starting from scratch when Chelsea begin their European campaign
here tomorrow night.
The Blues open their Group H programme against Paris St Germain in the Parc
des Princes hoping that Mourinho can repeat the success he achieved last
season when he led Porto to the biggest trophy in European club football.
Mourinho is hungry for more silverware and is determined to instil in his
players the winning mentality which he believes has been lacking in recent
seasons.
'Tomorrow I start the competition I won last season but it is completely new,'
said Mourinho. 'Last season is past, it is history.
'When you win something like I did it is a fantastic feeling. I am still young
and I have many years of football in front of me.
'I cannot live with just that one Champions League success, I have to fight to
win more.
'Last season Chelsea got to the semi-finals but didn't have so much success in
terms of winning the competition, so when I am manager of a club like Chelsea
who have ambition and a fantastic group of players I must be the first one to
pushmy players and inject the ambition to win it.'
According to Mourinho there is one basic difference between the Porto side he
led to European glory and the Chelsea team with whom he is trying to repeat the
feat - time spent together bonding as a unit.
'The main difference between my Porto and my Chelsea is that at Porto we were
agroup working together for many, many months,' said Mourinho.
'We took it one step at a time, winning the UEFA Cup then arriving in the
Champions League as a very, very solid and mature team.
'My Chelsea is a completely new team. Half of the players are new and the
manager is new, and the time to train and improve the team is very limited.
'We have been together three months but really it is a month and a half because
players have had international commitments, so we are not yet a final product.
'In a few weeks we could arrive at a very good level. We are a very solid,
compact team, very difficult to beat, and I can imagine that over the course of
the season not many teams will beat us because we are really solid.
'We have to improve but we are ready to face such a difficult Champions League
group and arrive at the end of the six matches in December in the top two and
go through to the next stage.
'It is a completely different approach in the Champions League. We must get
nine points, and that is something we can control.
'This team has enough quality and the mentality to go into every match with
the points in our mind.'
England has had only one team reach the final of the Champions League since
being re-admitted to Europe 14 years ago, when Manchester United completed a
historic treble in 1999, and Mourinho puts that down to a lack of intelligence
and tactical nous on the pitch.
He said: 'When you play against teams from different countries with different
cultures and different football mentalities, one of the secrets of is to have
a big tactical culture.
'You have to adapt because to play an Italian side is not the same as playing
a Spanish side, not the same as playing a French side, and so on.
'You must be a team with thinking qualities. You must think on the pitch, not
just play by instinct or with your heart, or play like your opponents want
you to play.
'You have to be intelligent and clever on the pitch, to control the game and
control the emotions to get the result you want - this is crucial in the
Champions League.'
Wayne Bridge is set to return to the Chelsea team after being rested at Aston
Villa on Saturday, while Damien Duff is poised for his first appearance of the
season.
Good Luck!
