I'll deliver title sooner rather than later says Mourinho
Sat 18 Sep, 3:12 PM
LONDON (AFP) - Jose Mourinho vowed that he would deliver the Premiership title
to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich long before his long-term contract is up.
The self-confident Portuguese handler told the BBC that he had asked Abramovich
what he wanted from him when he replaced Claudio Ranieri in the summer after
guiding FC Porto to the Champions League trophy.
"He replied I want them to be one of the best teams in the world.
"That of course takes time but I don't believe it is going to take me the whole
of my contract to deliver on that," added Mourinho, whose rapid rise to the top
of the sport started with him acting as an interpreter for Bobby Robson when
the Englishman coached in Portugal.
Mourinho said that he enjoyed the ideal relationship between a coach and a club
owner, something which Ranieri never did as he had to constantly deny reports
linking other coaches with his job and eventually was sacked depsite guiding
Chelsea to the Champions League semi-finals and to second in the Premiership.
"It is the perfect relationship between an owner and a manager.
"I understand what he wants for the club, and if he wants to know about my work
he has to know, so all my opinions are open to him," said Mourinho, who has
seen Chelsea take 13 points from 15 in the Premiership and who face a tough
clash with unbeaten London rivals Spurs on Sunday - a team he claims approached
him last season to take over at the helm.
Mourinho denied he felt the pressure of taking over a club where so mich money
has been lavished on players as they try and win the Premiership.
"The only pressaure you can get is the reality if we are working well or not
but I am satisfied.
"I prepare my training sessions well in advance and spend hours and hours
preparing for matches, telling the players about their opposite numbers and
strategy. However football is like life you have to adapt sometimes."
Mourinho ever the perfectionist bemoaned the fact that his side had not had a
perfect start like Arsenal, who he said had an easier start to their campaign.
"I would be even more pleased if we had 15 points which we should as we played
really well in the Aston Villa game.
"Arsenal's start was something I was waiting for - good manager, good players a
lot of confidence but their start was not as different as ours or United's."
Mourinho said that although for once a big money offer had been turned down
when they bid for Steven Gerrard it had not been too much of a loss.
"When he (Gerrard) decided to stay at Live[rool we got Tiago instead.
"He is a fantastic solution, great player and a great boy. The way they are
playing in the middle Lamps (Frank Lampard) and Tiago is great."
Mourinho said that he had no regrets about choosing Chelsea.
"I feel great.
"I am really happy with my choice as I love the club and the people.
"I love the atmosphere in the league, the difficulties in every single match.
"Life in England I do not have much time to enjoy it but my family are adapting
well so if they are well then I am."
