Mourinho happy with his lot
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho insisted there is no reason to strengthen his squad
in the January transfer window - as he has not signed a single 'flop'.
Mourinho may have spent around £70million on bringing new players to Stamford
Bridge this summer, but he believes all of them have already started to show
value for money.
Given Roman Abramovich's riches, Chelsea have the financial potential to
delve into the transfer market again in January, but Mourinho is determined
to try to settle down his squad rather than risk further disruption.
Asked if he would be making any further additions to his squad in the next
transfer window, he declared: 'No, I don't think so.
'We are happy with everyone here so do not need to sign anyone else in January.
All the players have a part to play.
'I think it's more important in January to get two or three good players for the
youth or reserve teams, not for the first team.
'We have a good squad, we are happy with the players we have signed. We don't
have any flops. Every single new player is showing more or less his capacity.
Mourinho added: 'You have to choose well. Sometimes people just buy without
knowing what they are buying.'
With five wins and one draw behind his team so far this season at home and
abroad, the Chelsea boss is already confident enough to be expressing his hope
that Chelsea could even seal their Champions League qualification by early
November.
Having beaten PSG in Paris on Tuesday night, they now face home ties against
Porto and CSKA Moscow, followed by a trip to the Russian capital.
'If we can get eight or nine points in our first three or four matches and be
comfortable in the top position of the group, then maybe when December comes,
we'll be able to have a second plan in some group matches and think about the
Premiership,' he said.
'The winter is a problem for every club as it's a crucial moment for all the
competitions and the players are getting tired. It's one more reason for us
to solve the Champions League situation as soon as we can.
'I trust a lot in my squad though and I believe that in November, December
and January, when there are miles in their legs and conditions become more
difficult, I will have enough in my squad to cope with it because of their
quality.'
'I had a meeting at 8am on Friday with [chief executive] Peter Kenyon as we're
working to establish our scouting network,' he revealed.
'At the last stage, I have to go and decide. But at the start, I don't have
the time to go around the world. So we must find people who can smell the
first impressions. It takes time but in the future, we can have this well
organised.'
While Mourinho has brought three Portuguese players - Tiago, Ferreira and
Carvalho to Chelsea - he has no regrets about not signing Pedro Mendes, who
moved instead to Spurs.
Not that he does not rate Mendes highly, describing him as the 'perfect
tactical player', but he already has Claude Makelele, as well as Scott Parker
and Alexei Smertin, who can play in the holding role.
Mourinho concluded with a smile: 'We don't have to sign all the good players!'
