Chelsea enter Saturday’s clash against struggling West Bromwich Albion
as the Premiership team with the best record in all games this season.
That is the calculation of Jose Mourinho as he prepares to face the
club who parted company with their manager Gary Megson on Tuesday.

“If we add together the fourteen matches, we have one defeat, two
draws and eleven victories,” Mourinho explained. “We have the best record.
Arsenal has ten victories, one defeat like we have but one more draw.
“Arsenal were playing fantastic football, even better football than us
in the Premiership. I have to say this to be fair. That is why they are
first in the table and that is why they have a bigger goal difference than
us so big credit to them.
“But when you go to the pure reality of numbers over the fourteen
matches, we are the best team in England.”
Former Portsmouth, Swansea and Cardiff manager Frank Burrows has been
given temporary charge of the home side and it is not to first time this
season Chelsea will face a team so soon after a change at the top.
We played Southampton just days after Paul Sturrock was sacked and such
situations always complicate preparations. For instance, West Brom under
Megson have long played with five at the back. But will that continue under
the experienced Burrows?

“It is always difficult,” reckons Mourinho on planning for games like
this. “West Brom’s manager is out, the players want to prove to the new
one even though this one may not stay for a long time. It is always
difficult because of that mentality and they come from a bad game against
Crystal Palace. The mistakes they made they don’t want to repeat.
“They will be more concentrated, they will fight a lot and the public
will push them. They didn’t play in the middle of the week in the Carling
Cup so they could train and rest well and be prepared for this game.
“It is big motivation for them because everybody wants to beat the big
teams and I don’t like too much these matches, I have to say. I would
prefer to play against a team at the top of the league.
“It will be a difficult game for us but we have to win because
normally after the defeat in Manchester, Arsenal will beat Southampton at
home and maybe Man United with the happiness of that victory will get the
three points in their match. So we have to win.”
Mourinho has no new injury problems to concern him before travelling to
the West Midlands. Only Didier Drogba is unavailable.
The Chelsea squad for the game is:

Ferreira, Johnson, Gallas, Carvalho, Terry, Bridge,
Makelele, Parker, Tiago, Smertin, Geremi, Lampard, Cole, Duff, Robben,
Kezman, Gudjohnsen.
West Brom’s major concerns are in attack with Geoff Horsfield a major
injury doubt with a knee problem. Kanu and Robert Earnshaw have toe and rib
injuries but are more likely to be available.
Chelsea old boy Neil Clement is back after completing a three-match ban
but Darren Purse is suspended.
