Jose eager to raise the bar
By Matt Hughes, Evening Standard
5 November 2004
The clocks may have gone backwards last weekend, but Jose Mourinho's own
timetable has been dramatically moved forward.
When this puckish Portuguese strode purposefully into Stamford Bridge last
summer he declared that it would take his new team at least one season to be as
cohesive as Arsenal and Manchester United, but he believes the ground has
already been made up.
It is difficult to argue: in 16 games in all competitions this season, Chelsea
have 13 wins, 12 clean sheets and just one defeat, courtesy of a disputed
penalty. With Arsenal wobbling and United uncharacteristically inconsistent,
Chelsea's time is now.
Mourinho said: "We've put pressure on ourselves as we've not asked for time. We
said from the beginning that we want to win every game and to be one of the
best teams in Europe.
"Of course next season my team will be better and in two seasons even better,
but at the moment we're fighting for results and coping well with the pressure.
"We can achieve something big this season."
The suspicion remains that Chelsea's patient passing game is more suited to
European than domestic football, but such is their self-belief that they will
take some stopping in all competitions.
Arsenal's blip has raised expectations of a first championship in 50 years, but
Mourinho has told his players to concentrate on themselves.
He said: "We can't think about Arsenal. We have to win our own matches and see
what they do.
"They cannot win every match but will not lose points every weekend.
"Maybe tomorrow they will lose points or they will return with a victory at
Crystal Palace, but we must make sure we win our game and stay on top of the
league.
"We've lost one game to Manchester City, but after that won five consecutive
games, which is very important. You have to show you're strong enough for the
fight.
"We're defending very well at the moment, the whole team. Of course one day we
will concede a goal, but that will not be the end of the world."
Chelsea are unlikely to concede tomorrow, but breaking down an obdurate Everton
will be more of a challenge. David Moyes's side are unbeaten away from home
this season, having won four of their five games, and Mourinho is anticipating
a difficult afternoon.
He said: "Everton are having a great season so it will be tough. We've just had
a big game and a long flight so maybe the team will be a bit tired, but we have
to be mentally strong.
"If we score one goal more than Everton it's very nice for me."
Mourinho also insisted he would not sell Robert Huth to Newcastle, who have
expressed an interest in the defender, and praised another player who has
played little part this season, Scott Parker.
He said: "I'm not willing to listen to Newcastle. I need four top central
defenders, not three top and one ordinary, and we have that now. Robert is one
of the best young central defenders in Europe and we're not interested in a
sale, a loan or anything."
Mourinho added: "Scott has shown a fantastic attitude and is playing very well.
I'm happy, he's happy and we've closed the mouths of those who were saying he
is going to leave."
