Jose relaxed about Christmas times
Friday, Dec 24, 2004
Jose Mourinho has laughed off the mind games of Arsene Wenger and Sir
Alex Ferguson who have questioned Chelsea’s ability to sustain our
Championship charge. And he has said they might be right — but also
they might be wrong!
“I think we are doing a great season,” he said. “We have just one
defeat, we have no defeats at home.
“I am not surprised by what we are doing and what we achieve, but it
could be worse because it is a new team. But now the challenge is to
stay there, to keep doing the same kind of results.
“The most important answer for some question marks that I understand
and accept is to do after a defeat what we did after the Manchester
City game, that one defeat does not mean another defeat but the start
of a winning run.”
Ferguson pointed out that Chelsea have still to go to Manchester United
and both Liverpool clubs, and may have a problem in the north. Jose
didn’t argue.
“Maybe it is true we have a problem north. We will see. But for sure
Manchester United have a problem in the south because they lost at
Stamford Bridge, they lost at Portsmouth and they dropped two points
at Fulham.”
Ferguson and Wenger also said they expected Chelsea to drop points over
the cluster of games during Christmas and New Year. Jose, again, didn’t
argue.
“Maybe they are right. If we lose points over Christmas, if we are not
still top, they are correct. If we are still top, they are incorrect.
“It is normal to lose matches, it is normal to lose points. When you
play four matches in a few days it is normal to lose some points. I am
not worried. If we lose and are only two points ahead we are still in a
good position.
“The reality is it difficult to play four matches in a short period, but
it is not difficult for Chelsea, it is difficult for everybody.
“The short-term challenge is to get the maximum points possible out of
these four matches and control the five points advantage we have over
second position.”
Chelsea start the Christmas/New Year games at home to Aston Villa. Jose
is aware of the potential stumbling block.
“I understand in history it is always a difficult match for Chelsea to
play them. They create for us a very difficult game at Villa Park. It
will not be a surprise for us if the game is very difficult, we are
working to be ready for that.
Chelsea has won just three times on Boxing Day in the last 15 years, all
away games. Two were at Southampton, the other was at Aston Villa! That
was in 1996 when two Gianfranco Zola goals past Mark Bosnich helped cement
the new Zola-Hughes attacking partnership and continued launching the
Italian towards his Footballer of the Year award.
