Chelsea prepare for Pompey with Gallas a doubt
Monday, Dec 27, 2004
As he turns his attention to the trip to Portsmouth, Jose Mourinho
believes a second fixture in three days after Christmas may bring with it
a few goals for either side.
The Chelsea manager may be forced to change a defence that kept yet
another clean sheet on Boxing Day against Aston Villa. William Gallas is
a doubt with an ankle injury. However if Gallas is ruled out, Ricardo
Carvalho is expected to have overcome his broken toe sufficiently to slot
back in at centre-back.
It is not due to these backline alterations that Mourinho believes
there may be goals at Fratton Park. Instead it is the physical demands of
the Christmas programme he has in mind.
“Before Aston Villa we had a complete week from Monday to Sunday to
prepare which we hadn’t had for a few months,” he said. “The most
difficult situation is this next match. We have just 24 hours to train and
travel to Portsmouth. Every team plays under the same circumstances but I
think it is the most difficult situation to have just one day rest.
“I understand that Boxing Day is an important day for the football
culture in England. We have to play on the 26th, I accept that but to play
on the 28th, if some players get injuries all over the country, I think
you have to think about it.
“You can speak not with me but speak with specialists on energetic
systems, biochemical areas and physiology and they will tell you it is
completely impossible for a player to recover in 24 hours from what they
did. So I can guess the next match for some players will be very, very
difficult.”
On the positive side Mourinho believes he has the squad to cope with
the extra demands plus there will be no advantage for any of Chelsea’s
closest rivals.
He added: “Now it is busy and the squad is ready to answer. We have
players for rotation, I have a lot of solutions, the players will feel
there will be chances for everybody.
“My team is in a good shape. In the next game Arsenal has to go to
Newcastle, Man U has to go to Aston Villa and Everton has to go to
Charlton so everybody has difficult games.
“I love to play. I prefer to play than to train. The question with a
lot of matches is you have to know what to do in training. You have to
adapt your training to the number of matches and to the period in between
matches.
“It is not a drama to play so many matches. The little drama is
because in England there are a lot of foreign players and you have no
chance to go to your country. I think it is not easy for some families but
if you can forget what Christmas means in terms of families, if you
concentrate on just football then it is fantastic.
“The stadiums are full and it is a special period in England because a
lot of families go to football.”
In addition to the question mark over the fitness of William Gallas,
Robert Huth and Celestine Babayaro remain on the injured list along with
long-term casualty Scott Parker.
Portsmouth, who are looking for their first win over Chelsea in any
competition since 1960, played a 4-5-1 formation in their Boxing Day win
over Crystal Palace with Yakubu returning to lead the attack.
Shaka Hislop is likely to retain his place in goal having come back
into the side for groin strain victim Jamie Ashdown. Defenders Dejan
Stefanovic and David Unsworth are ruled out with thigh strains while
Lomana LuaLua has an ear infection. Midfielder Gary O’Neil may return.
