Mourinho reveals Liverpool snub
Jose Mourinho says he turned down the chance to become Liverpool manager
before taking the Chelsea job.
Mourinho was approached when he was at Porto but he rejected the Reds,
who then appointed Rafael Benitez.
"I was invited to meet Liverpool's representatives on the eve of Porto's
Champions League game at Manchester United in March," he said.
"But I was preparing for a crucial match and wasn't prepared to leave the
hotel to meet another club."
The Portuguese coach has since guided Chelsea to the top of the Premiership,
five points clear of defending champions Arsenal.
He was strongly linked with the job at Stamford Bridge as a replacement
for Claudio Ranieri in the last few months of the Italian's reign in west
London.
But Mourinho insists he did not talk to the Blues until after the Champions
League final against Monaco in May, which his team won.
"Everything Chelsea did was correct. I wanted to leave Porto in a good way
and Chelsea agreed to wait," he added.
