Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admits he would not swap any of his midfielders
for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
The England international has repeatedly been linked with a switch to Stamford
Bridge and there were rumours of an offer during the summer.
With January's transfer window ready to swing open, there has been fresh
speculation that Mourinho will ask Roman Abramovich to dip into his personal
fortune to fund a bid for Gerrard.
Mourinho has been hit by injuries to his midfield and there are suggestions
he will seek reinforcements in the New Year.
But a blockbuster bid for Reds talisman Gerrard seems unlikely, despite
Mourinho being a fan of the rampaging midfielder.
"I think Gerrard is one of the best midfielders in The Premiership," said
Mourinho.
"But I don't think he's better than Frank Lampard and my players are always
better than the other players!"
Mourinho can assess Gerrard at first hand on New Year's Day as Chelsea
travel to Anfield looking to stretch their lead at the top of the table.
With a home clash against Middlesbrough to follow the Reds tussle, Mourinho
fully expects to be at the summit by the time of the FA Cup third round.
He added: "I think it's going to be tough because they are a good team but
I don't see it being tougher for other reasons.
"They have a fantastic crowd behind them, good players, a good manager and
they need to win. One point is not good for them.
"Everyone thought Chelsea would slip up and lose points over the Christmas
period but I think, at the end of this period after the Middlesbrough game,
that it's difficult for Chelsea not to be top of the league.
"So, when we go through this period and still be top of the league, I think
it's fantastic and I think we have been top for eight or nine weeks so if
we can extend that until the end of these two matches, I think we are in a
good position."
