Still no great buying plans

Jose Mourinho has ruled out purchasing a left-back in January to
replace Celestine Babayaro, but has again said that if a ‘stable’
player comes along who can do a job in midfield, Chelsea would be
interested.


“Left-back, I don’t think so,” he said today, Thursday, after
agreements had been reached for Babayaro to move to Newcastle, and
then admitted it was a position that is now changed in character in
the club.


“We have only one specialist, Wayne Bridge, but (William) Gallas
and Paulo (Ferreira) can also play there and did it, and since we
have (Ricardo) Carvalho and Robert Huth back soon, it’s not a problem
to use Gallas on the left. If we use Glen Johnson it’s not a problem
to play Paulo there.”


However, having stated when he joined the club that he liked a squad
of 23 or 24, he admitted it was no longer that.


“We started the season with 24 players and we thought 24 was the
correct number to face the whole season.


“We lost Mutu, we lose Parker, we will lose Babayaro, so we have 21:
18 outfield and three goalkeepers. That is the minimum for certain,
and that is why I say if we have the chance to get one more player we
will, but no big money for spending now and no really big players to
do it now.


“If we can get a stable and a balanced player we will do it, but no
pressure.”


He has already ruled out a January move for Steven Gerrard, but under
questioning from the press enthused that he is a top player.


“I think he is one of the best. I don’t think he’s better than Frank
Lampard, and my players are always better than the other players.”


He admitted this was a bad time to be without several players, but
pointed out it was also the most likely time to be without them. And
he dismissed the idea that Chelsea has it harder than anyone else.


He said of his players: “When they get tired everybody gets tired, not
just them. I hope we can be involved with the Premiership and the
Champions League at the end of the season, and they will be motivated.
Motivation is the most important thing.”
