Mourinho plays his ace card
By Henry Winter (Filed: 18/02/2005)
Jose Mourinho claimed last night he was a better manager than Frank Rijkaard,
whose Barcelona side play host to Mourinho's Chelsea in the Champions League
next week.
"Rijkaard has zero titles and I have a lot of them," observed
Mourinho. When the celestial authorities were dishing out self-confidence,
they did not stint on Mourinho.
Chelsea's head coach, who admitted there was "little chance" that Didier
Drogba would shake off a thigh problem for the Nou Camp visit, also voiced
his deep desire to defend the Champions League crown he won at Porto last
season. Talking after training yesterday, Mourinho added that he would keep
an English heart-beat at Chelsea, in contrast to Arsenal whose 16-man squad
against Crystal Palace on Monday all hailed from overseas.
But it is his comments about Rijkaard that will stir most controversy.
"Rijkaard's history as a player can't be compared to my history," said
Mourinho of a dynamic midfielder who conquered Europe with AC Milan, Ajax
and Holland. "His history is fantastic, mine is zero. But my history as a
manager can't be compared to his, because he has zero titles and I have a lot
of them. He just can't be compared to me."
Rijkaard, though, has excelled at Barcelona, blending an attractive,
hard-working side from such stellar talents as Xavi, Ronaldinho, Samuel
Eto'o and Deco. But before assuming control at Nou Camp, Rijkaard endured
disappointing spells with Sparta Rotterdam, who were relegated, and the
Dutch national side.
However factually correct, Mourinho's appraisal of Rijkaard's coaching
career was hardly diplomatic. Barcelona themselves were belittled by further
comments from the assertive man who used to be assistant to Sir Bobby Robson
and Louis van Gaal at Nou Camp.
"I don't have to be jealous about Barcelona because they have 100 years of
history and have won the European Cup once," added Mourinho. "I have only
been managing for five years and I have the same amount of Champions League
trophies to my name."
Mourinho did acknowledge the menace within Catalan ranks. "Barcelona have
the African player of the year [Eto'o], the world player of the year
[Ronaldinho] and the best player in the Champions League last year [Deco].
Ronaldinho is pure talent."
But he relished the pending challenge.
"I have to defend what is mine and
the Champions League is mine, at the moment. I was the last winner as a
manager, so it's my competition and my cup. I have to fight for Chelsea and
fight for myself and defend my cup until the last moment I can. It means a
lot to me. Maybe because I won the Champions League I had a big turn in my
life and I could come to a big football country like England.
"Winning the Champions League was something unforgettable for me, but
something I want to repeat. It's very difficult to win the Champions League.
There are a lot of fantastic managers in the world who couldn't win a
single one. To win it once, you must be a good manager."
His task next week has been hampered by the long-term injury to Arjen Robben
and the absence of Drogba. Chelsea's inspirational captain, John Terry,
jarred an ankle playing in goal in training yesterday, while Frank Lampard
has a slight knock.
Terry will miss Sunday's FA Cup tie at Newcastle United
through suspension but he and Lampard should start against Barcelona.
England internationals like Terry and Lampard are the heart and soul of
Mourinho's Chelsea. "It would be difficult for us not to have any British
players in our side," said Mourinho. "We have a good number of English
players. Every national team game we have a minimum of three or four players
involved. I believe in home players. Peter Kenyon [Chelsea's chief executive]
and Mr [Roman] Abramovich [Chelsea's owner] feel the same.
"It's important, although you can do it without them. The best proof of that
is the success Arsenal have had over the last few years with a lot of
foreign players. But that's not the point.
As a foreign manager, I feel a
bit responsible for the English clubs and the English national team, the
English players and the other home players. I would never forget that
responsibility in relation to the future of some kids and the youth football.
"Supporters fall in love with the players they believe have the same feeling
for the club they do. I don't think you need to be made in the club to feel
the club. I don't think the Chelsea supporters have any doubt that a player
like [Claude] Makelele, who arrived here at 29 years of age, really wants
the club to succeed.
"When you want to bring to the club the best young players in this country,
for the future, you must be able to show these kids – and their parents –
that there is a chance of succeeding in the club. If kids of 10, 12, 14 and
their parents can see English boys like John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole,
it's easier for them to say 'yes, we'll go to Chelsea and train there because
we believe in their philosophy'."
Belief has never been lacking with Mourinho.
