Jose blasts fixture schedule again

Jose Mourinho has again lambasted the fixture scheduling which now
sees Chelsea play Newcastle on Sunday before visiting Barcelona next
Wednesday.
At a pre-Barcelona press conference yesterday, Wednesday, he listed
the reasons why English clubs have not done better in the Champions
League, and after the difficulties of last week’s scheduling of the
Everton game which was at lunchtime on Saturday after internationals,
he found more difficulties this week.
He had three reasons why English clubs don’t do better. Scheduling
of fixtures was in the third reason.
“It’s very difficult to win. You can perform well, you can have a
good team, you can have big ambition, but you make one mistake and
you are out of the competition even when you don’t deserve,” he
started.
“The second reason is because I think we English teams must play
in Europe different to how we play in our competitions. You must
play not so much with your heart and more with your brain. If you play
just with your heart against Spanish and Italians you have no chance.
“And the third reason is because these countries protect the teams
who are playing in Europe, and in England you don’t do it. For example,
if in Porto I play a Champions League game, the game before in the
Portuguese League I play on Friday. Or if I play a Champions League
game on Wednesday, the next Portuguese game I play on Monday.
“And here, especially with Chelsea, we have to play Sunday (and then
have) to play in Barcelona next week.
“Spanish, Portuguese, French, they all have that protection. When I
play for the Champions League Final, Monaco didn’t play for the French
Championship the weekend before. They went to Germany for seven days
waiting for the Final.
“Yesterday (Wednesday), (there were) some matches in UEFA Cup. If
Newcastle play yesterday in Heerenveen, we could play against Newcastle
on Saturday. One more day to rest against Barcelona. Barcelona play
Saturday, we play Sunday. This is the type of situation you must fight
for because this team is representing your country.
“I always had somebody from the Portuguese League calling me to say,
you play against Real Madrid on Tuesday, when do you want to play your
game? Friday! Okay, so you’re game is Friday night. I always had this
kind of protection.
“Why this weekend they (Arsenal and Manchester United) play Saturday
and I play Sunday? And if on Saturday I have to wake up at seven o’
clock in the morning to play against Everton, why this weekend at
Newcastle the game is not at 12 o’clock? I could wake up at seven
o’clock.
“Now I will be one day waiting for the game, I have to play, I have to
fly to Barcelona and arrive at two o’clock in the morning. I’m not
English but I would like English teams to win the Champions League…
especially Chelsea.”
