Partly English and homegrown the way forward
Friday, Feb 18, 2005
The coming UEFA rule about the quota of homegrown players required for
UEFA games is supported by Jose Mourinho but with some amendments wanted.
“I don’t agree immediately, we need time for that,” he insisted.
“They must know because we can show the money Chelsea is spending in
training facilities, in Academy, in human qualities, good coaches, good
medical department, Chelsea is investing a lot in that philosophy. But we
cannot produce players in six months. So yes, but give time for the clubs
to organise themselves.”
He is happy with Chelsea’s English quota of players. “We have quite a
good number of English players, every national team game we have a minimum
of three or four players involved.
“I believe in home players, I think Peter Kenyon and Mr Abramovich feel
exactly the same, so we’re doing that investment in the youth football
and in a couple of years we will be ready to answer to the demands of FIFA.”
However, he is not dogmatic that it is the only way to success.
“You can do it without this and the best answer you have is in the success
of Arsenal over the last years with a lot of foreign players.
“But I think, especially as a foreign manager as I am, I feel responsible
also for the English clubs, the English national team, the home players,
so I would never forget my responsibility in relation to the future of kids.
“I think the supporters fall in love with players that feel the club. I
don’t think you need to be made at the club to feel the club. I don’t
think Chelsea supporters have any doubts that, for example, a player like
Makelele who arrives here with 29 years of age wants very much Chelsea to
succeed.
“But it helps when you want to bring to the club the best young players in
the country. I think you must show these kids and show their parents they
have a chance to succeed in the club so if kids of ten, twelve, fourteen
and their parents see John Terry, they see Frank Lampard, they see Robert
Huth, they see Joe Cole, they see these kind of boys succeeding in the club,
I think it’s easier for them to say yes, you go to Chelsea.”
