Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has made it absolutely clear that he does not
want to sign Rio Ferdinand, although he respects the Manchester United star's
talents.
The Blues boss has an embarrassment of riches at centre half as he looks to
steer his side to a remarkable Treble triumph in his first season in charge.
Chief executive Peter Kenyon, the man photographed having dinner with Ferdinand
and agent Pini Zahavi, has also reiterated that there is no truth in the
speculation linking the ex-Leeds United stopper with a move to West London.
"Rio is an amazing player," enthused Mourinho. "We cannot hide that.
"But John Terry, in this season, is the best central defender in England. I
don't say he's better than Rio, people can have different opinions, but this
season, he's the best.
"Ricardo Carvalho was the best in the Champions League last season and he's
an amazing player.
"It's a pity William Gallas has to play left back because he's a fantastic
central defender. Robert Huth is in the German national team - he's made in
Chelsea and a player we want to keep.
"So it's completely impossible that we are interested in a central defender."
Kenyon told Sky Sports News that the matter should be closed as Ferdinand
continues his contract negotiations with the Blues official's former club
Manchester United.
"I thought we had put it to bed by the statement we made," he said.
"I spoke to David Gill [United's chief executive], whenever it happened and
made it quite clear.
"Jose said it today, we've got some great centre halves and, as good as Rio
is, we're not in the market for him.
"End of story."
