Face off: Mourinho v Wenger

-EYESIGHT-
Wenger: awful. Whether wearing glasses or not, the Frenchman has been unable to
confirm, let alone comment on, any of his team’s 59 red cards during his time
in charge.

Mourinho: brilliant. Never mind 20-20, the Chelsea manager actually has X-ray
vision. Has been known to spot an opposing manager entering a referee’s room
even though he wasn’t actually there himself.


-ABILITY TO DEFY LOGIC IN SIGNING COMPATRIOTS-
Wenger: masterful. The Frenchman has returned to his homeland to collect a
series of unwanted players, Remi Garde, Pascal Cygan, Gilles Grimandi, David
Grondin, etc.

Mourinho: struggling. The Chelsea manager has so far signed only top-quality
Portuguese players, although he may improve as he settles into what is a
relatively new job.


-EXCUSE MAKER-
Wenger: expert. Once excused a stamp by Dennis Bergkamp on a Blackburn Rovers
player by saying “maybe it was a nervous reaction”. Has frequently complained
of an FA vendetta against his team.

Mourinho: Learning fast: Had few opportunities to explain a poor result during
a fantastic first season at Chelsea but made the most of them, twice revealing
that “the better team lost”.


-HUMOUR-
Wenger: decent. Responded to Sir Alex Ferguson’s claims that Manchester United
were superior to Arsenal by observing that “everyone thinks they have the
prettiest wife at home”.

Mourinho: excellent. After hearing that Ricardo Carvalho had said he did not
understand why he had been dropped, the manager said he must have a low IQ.


-COOLNESS-
Wenger: poor. Rages on the touchline when opponents or the referee obstruct
Arsenal’s path to greatness.

Mourinho: good. Responded to dramatic Chelsea goals by offering a quiet word of
sympathy to Paul Jewell, his Wigan Athletic counterpart, and by gesturing to
Liverpool supporters, with his finger to his lips, to keep their mouths shut.
