Cool Jose laughs off Wenger claims
Jose Mourinho has dismissed claims by Arsene Wenger that Chelsea paid over
for the odds for winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Arsenal were interested in signing Wright-Phillips but found themselves
priced out of the market with Chelsea luring the England international away
from Manchester City for ￡21million.

Wenger stated yesterday that a more realistic price for the 23-year-old
would have been closer to ￡10million and insisted a player's value doubles
as soon as Chelsea enter the bidding.
But Mourinho replied: 'Wenger has his opinion. I think the English market
is a special market.

'The fee between English clubs is always very, very high - not because of
Chelsea but because of the English market.
'It's not just Shaun - every player who moves from an English club to another
English club is too expensive, but that's the market.

'If we are to have a core of English players, we have to buy at least one

Wright-Phillips' arrival means Mourinho has already recruited his minimum
quota of Englishmen for the year, so it is Lyon midfielder Michael Essien who
remains his final transfer target.
Lyon have so far derailed Essien's dream move to Stamford Bridge by
slapping a ￡32million price tag on his head and the 22-year-old Ghanaian
international is now refusing to play for the French club in protest.

Mourinho admits he is bemused at what has become the lengthiest transfer
saga of the summer and insists Essien would be allowed to leave Chelsea if he

Essien. I'm cool. There's no rush to sign him because I have until the end of
the transfer window. If I don't get him I won't look elsewhere.

Peter Kenyon raised a few eyebrows at Highbury and Old Trafford at the
start of the week by declaring Chelsea had no competition for the Barclays
Premiership title but Mourinho has welcomed his chief executive's remarks.
'I think it's quite good when people try to motivate us and that's what Mr
Kenyon is doing. It's good to hear that our chief executive trusts us so much.
Other teams should ignore what he says,' he said.

While Mourinho appreciates Kenyon's comments, he insists he will longer react
to what his rivals say and vowed to focus only on events at Stamford Bridge.
'If we all concentrate on our own job it won't be good for the media because
they won't have interesting things to write, but it will be good for football.
'As managers we should have respect for each other and ignore the words
of other people,' he said.
'My philosophy for this season is to think about Chelsea and not to look at
the other people. We must forget what they say and live independently of that.
'If I need to say something later in the season I will but at the moment I'll
focus on us. I'm not interested in other people's comments.'
