KENYON GIVES RANIERI HIS BACKING
Sunday 8th February 2004
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has given his backing to Blues
boss Claudio Ranieri and insists there is no plans to get rid of the Italian
coach.
Speculation has intensified in the last week with England coach Sven
Goran Eriksson admitting he could take over at Stamford Bridge, while Kenyon
has heaped pressure on Ranieri claiming this season would be a failure if
they failed to win anything.
Rumours of Eriksson taking over at Chelsea have been abound since he
was photographed visiting Roman Abramovich's London residence, but Kenyon
believes there was nothing sinister in the meeting between the pair.
"The picture was unfortunate. That was then, this is now," Kenyon told
the Sunday Times.
"There's nothing planned and Claudio has got three years on his contract.
"I've lived through the speculation surrounding a manager and it's
destructive. We want to turn it off because we want the focus of everyone at
Chelsea to be on the rest of the season.
"It's not right that every time we lose a game he is looking over his
shoulder."
Meanwhile, Kenyon hopes that the row surrounding his old club Manchester
United involving Sir Alex Ferguson and shareholders John Magnier and JP
McManus will soon be resolved.
The saga over the ownership of racehorse Rock of Gilbratar has raised
doubts over Ferguson's future at Old Trafford as the club's two biggest
shareholders conduct an investigation into United's transfer dealings.
Kenyon rejected suggestions that he quit his role at United as he saw
the trouble coming that is currently afflicting the club.
"It's sad for all parties because it's taken people's eyes off the ball
," said Kneyon.
"Everybody is bigger than where it's getting to at the minute, and it
needs to move on. It's flattering if people think I saw it coming, and life's
all about timing. It is true that I was close to the whole thing, but that's
not why I left. I left because of the opportunity Chelsea was offering."
Kenyon is ready to come to the help of Ferguson by defending him over
the transfer dealings during his time at the club.
"I was chief executive while these things were going on, so these
questions are being asked about me. That's fine," added Kenyon.
"All the transactions were carried out with the approval of the full
board.
"I knew where all the money was going and how much was going to agents.
There was nothing hidden, there was absolute transparency.
"I haven't been asked to co-operate yet but I will if required."
