Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri has been holding talks with chief executive
Peter Kenyon designed to finally clear up the lingering confusion over his
long-term Stamford Bridge future.
The timing is interesting, coming just weeks after the rather embarrassing
public exposure that Chelsea had been talking to England coach Sven-Goran
Eriksson.
And, perhaps more significantly, it is being held with Chelsea now
seriously contemplating the prospect of winning the Champions League
after their wonderful win against Arsenal.
There has been a major shift in emphasis regarding Ranieri's future since that
win against Arsenal-namely in that it is now the Italian who holds all the aces.
It seems that nothing has been resolved and his future is still uncertain,
but Ranieri went into the talks in a considerable position of strength.
Chelsea's message at the start seemed clear: "You can have your £100m
but you're still out at the end of the season."
This has now backfired because, based purely on the job he has done,
they cannot realistically sack him and the only way he should leave
Chelsea is if he wants to go.
And why would he want to do that when he has helped create something
that is clearly on the brink of being very special?
Go back six months, and even though the Chelsea fans had taken him to their
hearts, they would not have gone into open rebellion if he had lost his job.
Now he has achieved consistency and team spirit - not easy even if you
are given £100m to spend - put Chelsea in contention for the Premiership
and the Champions League, and has the total respect and affection of
Chelsea's supporters and neutrals.
They see a genuine man who has done a very good job this season being
badly treated.
Chelsea's strategy regarding Ranieri's future has not gone as smoothly
as planned because of the sheer weight of public support behind him,
from Chelsea fans and beyond.
And this has not been some misguided sympathy vote because he is a nice
guy - Ranieri deserves this credit and respect because of the job he has done.
Chelsea could conceivably win the Champions League, given the way the
cards have fallen for them, and apart from the last couple of games have
reached a level of consistency that will make them among the three firm
favourites for next season's title.
Gone are the days of getting 10-1 on Chelsea for the Premiership, and much of
that is down to Ranieri's management as well as Roman Abramovich's chequebook.
He still needs a couple of players, but he has got a great blend of
excellent British players and top foreign imports.
Chelsea have never been serious contenders for the Premiership, but they
certainly will be next season.
Indeed, they have only been thwarted by a freak season from Arsenal this
time around.
Every team usually has a blip - Arsenal have not had one. If they had
slipped up, Chelsea would have been right there to take advantage.
Chelsea's players have stuck to their task week in and week out, which
is a good reflection on the manager and the respect he has.
Arsenal are exceptional, but Chelsea are not far behind.
And we know the money is there for Chelsea to outbid anyone in the world
should the big-time players become available this summer.
But if you set aside the money, Ranieri has still done a better job than
any of us would have thought possible.
Ranieri has built a team and team spirit - and make no mistake you will
win nothing without that spirit.
You could have handed Ranieri a billion pounds, but if he had put 11
strangers on the pitch he would have got nowhere.
Ranieri has got results, spirit, talent, respect - and the nation has
warmed to his ability to do all this against the clear backdrop that he
was still fighting for his job.
This is why Ranieri, once on a hiding to nothing, now holds all the best
cards in his talks with Chelsea.
