For Chelsea fans, life doesn’t get much better in this current three-
horse race: toppling the defending champions while London rivals Arsenal drop
two points at home to Fulham.
Yesterday afternoon’s result, in front of our largest gate of the season,
puts us back at the top of the League, one point clear of Arsenal and four
clear of Manchester United. What a shame it wasn’t the last game of the
season!
That was a sentiment recognised by Chelsea head coach Claudio Ranieri.
“Today it is only 30th November,” stated the feet-on-the-ground Italian.
“If it was decided by just two games and we now had to go to Manchester and
play a second leg, maybe we can think of the Championship.
"But it's too early to look at it now, but I’m very pleased with this
great result against the champions. It will give us very good confidence,
without thinking about the title.”
After the win, the bookmakers have made Chelsea title favourites – but
the ever-cautious Ranieri is still not convinced.
"When I compare today's performance to the level Manchester United and
Arsenal are at, I would say we played well and showed good character,
everything was fantastic – but we must be like them and keep possession of
the ball better. We would do that if we were at the same level as Manchester.
"Instead, we were waiting for Manchester to do something. We must control
games better in the second-half.
"We will continue to work hard because now nothing is done. I know only
this way: work, work and work."
It was man-of-the-moment Frank Lampard’s penalty which proved to be the
difference between the two teams although, typically, Sir Alex Ferguson
angrily disputed its award.
“The penalty was a major decision and disappointing for us,” he claimed.
“He was going away from the goal.”
So just when did Frank Lampard become Chelsea’s penalty-taker?
“My main penalty scorer is Jimmy,” smiled Ranieri. “Then it’s Mutu
and then Frank.”
First-half Jimmy wasn’t on the pitch so obviously was out of the equation
– but Mutu was there.
Ranieri shrugged: “Yes, but every time Frank takes the ball! He’s very
clever.”
And what did the head coach make of his team’s sixth consecutive clean
sheet?
“First-half was very good. We moved the ball very well and created some
very good chances to try to score. They had, I think, just one chance with
Giggs.
“Second-half, they put us under pressure. I put Duff and Gronkjaer on to
put them under pressure on the flank but we suffered because Manchester are
Manchester.
Explaining Duff’s absence from the starting eleven, Ranieri said: “
Damien is a fantastic player. But he’s the one of my players who runs more
than other players in my team. So sometimes he needs time to recover. So I
didn’t start with him. I was hoping to win the first-half in this match so I
could bring him on in the second-half to give us something more.”
In fact, of yesterday’s starting line-up, only Duff was missing from
Wednesday night’s Champions League starting eleven against Sparta Prague.
“Remember more or less all my players played in the Champions League and
were a little tired while five or six Manchester players didn’t play midweek.”
Finally, as a footnote, Ranieri clarified just why Chelsea kicked off the
second-half with only ten players, the head coach peering down the tunnel for
the missing Geremi.
“He was one of the first ready to come out but when he saw it was raining
, he went back to change his boots.”
Now you know!
It was an excellent team performance with goal-scorer Frank Lampard voted
Emirates Man of the Match.
