Important to go through bad period quickly

Despite Claudio Ranieri being disappointed with Chelsea’s third League
defeat of the season as well as his team’s poor performance, he preferred to
tip Charlton for a place in Europe following their 4-2 victory.
“If they continue to play in this way, why not? Everything is possible
because they are a good team, good players, good organisation, they run, run,
run during all the matches and today they deserved to win.
“We conceded four goals which is unusual for us, they surprised us in the
beginning after 45 seconds and then we start the match
“Then we draw and also we create another two or three chances to score a
goal but Charlton score a goal. In the second-half we switch off for 10 minutes
and the four goals meant it was very, very difficult to draw the match
“We tried to do this but it was very, very difficult today. It was
strange because also in the second-half we created another two or three chances
with Jimmy, Eidur, Mutu, but I think Charlton deserved to win because if we
make mistakes they deserved to win.
“We conceded four goals in this match and I prefer four goals together
and not one each in four matches. Now we must react very quickly because now
there is Portsmouth, another difficult match.
“I know this is our bad period and it is important to go through it very
quickly. We want to stay with Arsenal and Manchester.
“I remember last season Sir Alex Ferguson said to his players no more
than five defeats and I said the same to my players today, no more than five
defeats. We want to fight for the title with them, it will not be easy but we
want to try. We want to stay in this race.”
Alan Curbishley had a smile on his face but rather than being impressed w
ith who his team had just beaten he was just pleased to get a result at home.

against Newcastle and didn’t do it and it was becoming a bit of a thing in
many people’s eyes and it’s just great that we won a home game.
“It was a big game, perhaps it was a game that we needed, we’re pleased
the cameras were here perhaps they might come back again, it all helps. I
think it was a great performance, we got our noses in front which is always a
bonus.
“I think the third goal was a great goal and I think it showed all the
best parts of us. We broke very quickly, got the ball up there, a little bit of
composure from Paulo and JJ finished it, a great goal. A great result for us
but I’m not going to get carried away, we’ve got a little bit of time for us
to recover and then we’ve got to go to White Hart Lane so it’s a hectic time
for us.”
“You have to manage the club you’re in charge of. I was told this week
that my net spending is the same they have spent on Damien Duff, that’s my
net spending for 12 years, but it doesn’t stop you competing. I think that’s
what we do. It is nice (to beat Chelsea and win) a local derby, the last
three Boxing days we have been away from home, we got walloped by West Ham,
which I am never going to forget, a draw at Fulham and Spurs.”
