“My problems all came when he went off. That was the turning point of the
game,” the Portsmouth boss lamented.
“I put Schemmel on and he started playing deeper and deeper and Bridge
suddenly had all the space in the world to come forward and start to influence
the game more.
“Suddenly Linvoy let Schemmel push back on to his toes and we got pushed
back onto the back foot.
“The goal summed it up as well. It was a 50 yard ball from behind over
the top of him and Bridge got in behind him and scored. Defensively it was a
poor goal. The ball’s travelled 50 yards and it’s a ball we should have
dealt with.
“But I couldn’t see that coming in the first-half. The last half-hour,
we lost our way because people didn’t do the jobs I wanted them to do.”
If the first-half was dire for the Blues, the team more than repaid the
fans with three exceptional goals in the second-half.
“The second-half was much better and we deserved to score. I am very
pleased with the result and our performance. It’s not easy seeing my players
work hard without a result.
“The first goal changes the match because the opponent wants to try to
score and to play football and go forward and we have more space.
“I would like to say well done also to Mutu. His second-half was
fantastic. I told him not to worry about scoring because he’s playing well
for the team.”
The match sponsors also agreed with Ranieri’s sentiments, voting Adrian
Mutu Emirates Man of the Match.
“Frank Lampard has come back well. He shot at goal a lot of times and
scored a fantastic goal.”
On the third goal, Geremi’s sensational volley, his first goal for
Chelsea, Ranieri joked: “I think he doesn’t know how he scored it!”
The perennial question of whether this result now resurrects Chelsea’s
chances of winning the title, was once more thrown at Ranieri. As before, he
dismissed the likelihood of the trophy coming to Stamford Bridge next May.
"Arsenal or Manchester United must win the title," he proposed. "We must
fight with them. We are not like Arsenal or Manchester because our pedigree is
not like theirs."
He also shrugged off speculation in the Sunday papers, this time
originating from Spain, suggesting that he would be sacked today.
Laughing, he countered: “They want me there!
"I work very well here and will continue here.
"In Italy when Chelsea win, it is 'Chelsea win' or 'Abramovich win' or
'Gudjohnsen score'. But when Chelsea lose, it is 'Ranieri loses' but that is
normal. I am used to it.”
Happy to put December to rest, Ranieri looked forward to a fresh start in
2004.
“We knew December was a bad month for us. Now it’s over I am sure the
new year will be better.”
