Ranieri defends eight changes

Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri defended his decision to once again make
sweeping changes as his side crashed 3-2 at Aston Villa to put their
hopes of an automatic Champions League spot in jeopardy.


Ranieri made eight alterations from the starting line-up in Saturday's
goalless draw with Middlesbrough as he lived up to his name of
`The Tinkerman'.


The Chelsea boss believed that fresh legs would give his side the
advantage over an injury-ravaged Villa squad for whom 10 players were in
action for the second time in 48 hours.


But Ranieri conceded that his side were out-battled by Villa and that he
now faces a big challenge from Manchester United for second spot in the
Premiership.


The Red Devils are now only six points adrift of Chelsea, have two games
in hand and have still to entertain the Blues at Old Trafford.


Ranieri said: 'I'm used to criticism now about changes. Maybe that was
right at the beginning of the season when players weren't used to each
other.


'But now we are rotating and changing the team every three or four days
and they are used to playing with each other whatever side I put out.


'I felt with eight fresh players we would be able to run more than
Aston Villa for whom 10 players had also played on Saturday at Bolton.


'I thought we could run more than Villa and we certainly started well,
got an early goal, closed the space down very well.


'But then the battle started and in the battle Villa were better than us.


'Now it is the start of a big challenge between us and Manchester United
for second place. I've already said that the title belongs to Arsenal.


'Our opponents were better than us today and, when that is the case you
lose.'


Ranieri would make no comment about his projected meeting on Wednesday
with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon over his future.
