Under-fire Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri has admitted he would have more chance
of staying in charge at Stamford Bridge "if I achieved more".
The Italian's job appears to be on the line, particularly after his tactical su
bstitutions against Monaco in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Tues
day backfired and resulted in a 3-1 defeat.
And ahead of Sunday's Barclaycard Premiership clash against Newcastle at St Jam
es' Park - a match that could hand Arsenal the championship if Chelsea lose and
the Gunners beat Tottenham - Ranieri has again spoken of his future.
He said: "I will have more chance of staying if I achieve more - but I don't kn
ow what. To answer a question honestly, I will not be surprised if I stay or go
.
"I have a contract until 2007 but that's no reason for me to stay. I won't be s
urprised either way."
The manager has attempted to motivate his players by emphasising the
manner in which Manchester United came back from a seemingly impossible
position in the 1999 Champions League final.
The Red Devils famously scored two goals in the final three minutes to
stun Bayern Munich and lift the crown.
Ranieri said: "I said after the first leg in Monaco that we only had a
20% chance of going through to the final.
"I still think that and it must be our best performance of the year and
maybe Monaco's worst if we are to go through.
"But I'd like my players to remember how Manchester United won the
Champions League."
Despite Ranieri's perennial job worries however, the Italian insists he
is still enjoying every moment of his life in west London.
"I'm a lucky man because I love this job," he said.
Ranieri's job prospects will be bolstered by victory at Newcastle but
the boss admits Alan Shearer will cause problems.
"I don't know how to stop Shearer," he added.
"Shearer's a great goalscorer but we'll try to play our game and score."
Ranieri is without Juan Sebastian Veron (back), Adrian Mutu (knee),
Scott Parker (hamstring) and fever victims Damien Duff and William
Gallas.
