The purchase of this skilful Croatian took Gianluca Vialli's spending
over the £25 million mark in the summer of 2000. A player with vast
international experience, Stanic possesses all the attributes required in
the modern game. Tall and strong, yet fast and agile, Stanic operates
equally well on the right flank or behind the frontmen and has weighed in
with a significant number of goals during his spells in the Croatian,
Spanish, Portuguese and Italian leagues.
Having replaced Dan Petrescu on the right for the Blues, Stanic
marked his arrival at Stamford Bridge with an incredible goal - juggling
the ball before volleying it from miles out - in Chelsea's first
Premiership game of 2000/01 against West Ham, which inexplicably did not
win the goal of the season award. Unfortunately, things went downhill from
there, as he suffered a bad injury soon after, which kept him out until
nearly the end of the season. Also, Vialli was replaced by Claudio Ranieri,
and it is always tough for someone signed just before a change of
management, as Winston Bogarge also found.
He managed to remain mostly injury-free in 2001/02, making 37
appearances, though he only started 27 of them, scoring 2 goals.
Nevertheless, he was included in the Croatia squad for World Cup 2002, and
is still a highly regarded player, even if Chelsea have yet to
consistently see his best.
2002/03 was another mixed season for Stanic, who made plenty of
appearances and scored six goals, but still rarely convinced his critics
that he deserved a regular place, so his future is uncertain as Chelsea
look to cut costs.
