Plenty to talk about but little talk

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink became the first Chelsea player to score a hat-
trick off the substitutes’ bench yesterday, and then admitted achieving the
100th Premier League goal of his career had been preying on his mind.
“You know me, I’m very relaxed,” he said. “But maybe it was.”
The goal, a wonderful, trademark Jimmy volleyed drive from outside the
area was, he said, lucky.
“I stepped over the ball so it would run to Hernan, but it deflected
off Craddock and bounced up for me nicely.”
He went on to pot his 101st and 102nd Premier League goals, and take his
overall tally for the season to 16.
Not surprisingly, he was voted Man of the Match and left the stadium in
possession of the match ball.
Claudio Ranieri, meanwhile, kept away from the limelight following
Chelsea’s 5-2 win over Wolves, leaving much of the gathered media with
no-one to talk to from the winning side.
He did reveal, however, that his half-time substitution, Damien Duff for
Eidur Gudjohnsen, had been forced on him by a groin strain to his striker
who has subsequently withdrawn from Iceland’s international in Albania this
week.
Also without international duty are England’s Frank Lampard and Wayne
Bridge, purposefully rested after a long, hard season for the match in
Sweden. Sven-Goran Eriksson has recalled Scott Parker, however, along with
John Terry and Joe Cole.
Lampard completed his 100th consecutive Premier League game in
yesterday’s win, scoring his 11th goal of the season overall, and like his
manager decided that enough has been said over the last week and ducked away
from the media.
Chelsea thus have the following players away on international duty: the
three Englishmen; the three Frenchmen, Marcel Desailly, William Gallas and
Claude Makelele as France travel to Holland; Adrian Mutu for Romania v
Holland; Damien Duff for Ireland v Czech Republic; Jesper Gronkjar for Spain
v Denmark; and Hernan Crespo for Argentina v Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier.
